Görlitz Depot

The Görlitz railway depot is a railway maintenance workshop in the Görlitz southern city area, which is now operated by the East German Maintenance Company. The ODIG is a subsidiary of the East German Railway Company, which operates several routes in the Lusatian railway network. The ODIG maintains the ODEG multiple units of the Lusatian network in the Görlitz workshop.
The railway depot has a long history. During the times of the regional railways, Prussian and Saxon passenger steam locomotives were serviced and maintained here. Initially, each regional railway maintained its own engine sheds for its steam locomotives within the workshop. After World War I, the regional railways merged into the German Imperial Railways, and the depot was then used solely by a state railway. Even after Görlitz connected to the electric railway network, only steam locomotives were housed in the depot. After the end of World War II, the depot found itself in a peripheral location within Germany or the GDR due to border changes. From the mid-1960s onwards, the first diesel locomotives made their entrance into the Görlitz depot, gradually displacing the steam locomotives. After reunification, in 1994, Deutsche Bahn took over the depot and operated it until 2002 for its vehicles. Since the end of 2002, private railway companies have been using the workshop for the maintenance of their vehicles.
