To remind and to warn, the Hürtgenwald Museum 1944 and in Peace in Vossenack recounts the story of the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest and its consequences for the local population. The museum is run by volunteers. Almost all the objects in the exhibition were collected in the Hürtgenwald after the war.
The Battle of the Hürtgen Forest took place in the fall and winter of 1944-1945 and claimed the lives of tens of thousands of American and German soldiers. But it was not only soldiers who suffered from the fighting. Villages, fields, and forests were completely destroyed. Therefore, the Hürtgenwald Museum 1944 and in Peace in Vossenack not only pays attention to military confrontations but also to the fate of the local civilian population during and after the fighting. When the evacuated residents were finally allowed to return to their homes, they found the work of generations completely destroyed. Throughout the summer of 1945, months-long forest fires and spontaneous explosions of leftover munitions claimed the lives of many men, women, and children. But with courage and dedication, the population took on the task of rebuilding their lives and their land from scratch.
