This northern city gate, built by the Romans at the end of the second century (around 180 AD), officially marks the start of the rally. The well-preserved gate (thirty-six meters wide; thirty high) was part of a six-kilometer-long city wall. It is the clearest reminder of the Roman era. It owes its name "Black Gate" to the weathered sandstone.
