The Werder Havel Bridge is a motorway bridge over the Potsdamer Havel in the city of Werder . It is 704 metres long and carries the A 10 motorway over the river.
At the beginning of the 1930s, there were plans for the construction of a motorway bridge over the Zernsee of the Havel in the course of the construction of the motorway around Berlin, today's A 10. In 1935, Potsdam's district president, Ministerialdirektor From, announced preliminary planning specifications. The bridge over Lake Zernsee south of the village of Phöben was to completely span the entire width of the water. In order to ensure safe passage for inland navigation, at that time mainly tow trains with several attachments, the main passage opening was to be at least 75 metres. This was mainly due to the strong westerly winds that often prevailed here. If only a smaller passage width is possible for bridge construction reasons, two bridge passages would have to be chosen, one separate for the descent and ascent. The bridge was to cross the Potsdamer Havel at the height specified by both banks. It is worth mentioning that the opinion of the Imperial Yacht Club in Potsdam was obtained on the clearance height for touring dinghies with a mast height of up to 6 metres at the time. They should be able to pass the bridge without having to lay the mast. In 1936, preparatory work began. The connecting embankments were filled in and levelled. The construction of the piers has begun. The responsible construction manager was engineer Zühlke from Niesky. Zühlke will later also lead the construction of the motorway bridge over the Teltow Canal in Dreilinden. For the population of the surrounding villages and also the city of Werder, the construction of bridges and the construction of the motorway was a welcome source of income. The bridge was opened to traffic in the early 1940s. Due to the war, however, a section of the western Berlin Ring remained unfinished, so that it was hardly used. The bridge survived the Second World War undamaged. It was not until 1979 that the section between the Potsdam-Nord junction and the Havelland junction was completed.
