Episcopal St.-Josef-Gymnasium Bocholt

The Episcopal St.-Josef-Gymnasium Bocholt, Kapu for short, is a Christian grammar school in Bocholt, Germany, which is supported by the Diocese of Münster.

After several years of efforts by the Order of the Capuchins, which had begun in 1905, a mission and monastery school was built from 1910 onwards according to plans by the Swiss architect Joseph Steiner at Hemdener Weg 19 in Bocholt, which Father Josef Leonissa Bleyer ceremoniously opened on 16 April 1912, after the first pupils from the Strasbourg-Königshofen monastery school had arrived on 3 April of that year and moved into the boarding school. Father Gregor Magnus Middendorf took office as the first headmaster. The early years of this small school, whose initial purpose was to prepare boys and young men for missionary work in the German South Seas, were marked by the events of the First World War. Thus, some students were called up for military service; Pupils from other Capuchin monastic schools, which were threatened by war, came to Bocholt. In 1917, all boarding students had to be sent home for lack of food.
