The Mannheim Market Square in the northern part of Mannheim's city center is one of the oldest and most frequented squares in the city.
The square is directly adjacent to the north-south axis of the city center, which is commonly referred to as "Breite Straße" (Broad Street), and encompasses the entire block G 1. At the southern end stands the baroque double building of the Old Town Hall and the Catholic parish church of St. Sebastian, which is the oldest building in Mannheim. The square itself is dominated by the Market Square Fountain, which was gifted to the city by Elector Karl Theodor in 1767. Through the "Marktplatz" stop with lines 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7 of the tram operated by Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH, the square is directly connected to the public transportation network.
