Alexander Redoubt

Alexanderschanze is a mountain pass on Federal Highway 28 near Freudenstadt in the Northern Black Forest. At the same time, there is the fortress complex Alexanderschanze and finally the Hotel Alexanderschanze.

The pass is located between Freudenstadt-Kniebis, Bad Peterstal-Griesbach, Oppenau, and Baiersbronn and offers a connection between the Rhine valley near Strasbourg and the Neckar valley, allowing the Black Forest to be crossed in an east-west direction without further major valley crossings and pass ascents.
North of the modern road running largely through the Forbach Valley from Kniebis to Freudenstadt, there are the place names "Old Road" and even "Roman Road." Although there are no secure sources indicating that Romans built this road, it can be safely assumed that the pass was used as a long-distance route in the early Middle Ages, as evidenced by the rail traces found in the forest. In this context, rail refers to the grooves still visible in the rock today, which were left by the wooden wheels shod with steel bands.
