Wallanlage Kirchberg in Möbisburg

The fortification on the Kirchberg in Möbisburg, southwest of Erfurt in Thuringia, originated in the La Tène period and likely dates in its present form from the time of Frankish rule in Thuringia. The Merwingsburg/Möbisburg gave the place its name.
The prehistoric and early historical fortification is located on the western end of the Möbisburg Kirchberg, a narrow ridge extending towards the River Gera. The approximately rectangular structure is about 250 m long and 80 to 130 m wide. In the south and west, there are natural steep slopes. In the north, the slope has been artificially stabilized and features a step that originally likely served as an obstacle to approach. The particularly vulnerable east side is secured by a slope with an added wall and a moat in front of it. The mountain was fortified at least by the La Tène period. The visible remains of the fortifications likely date back, as does the church standing on the site, to a new construction in Carolingian or Ottonian times. By the 18th century, ruins of this later expanded castle were still present.
