The St. Maria and St. Theodor Monastery on Kaulberg was an abbey of the Cistercian nuns until 1553; from 1589 to 1802 it was, and has been again since 1902, a monastery of the Carmelites in Bamberg, Bavaria, in the Diocese of Bamberg.
According to tradition, Bamberg's first bishop, Eberhard I. of Bamberg, is said to have founded a hospital for the sick and poor in 1030 on the hill opposite the Bamberg Cathedral, dedicating it to St. Theodor. In the area of this hospital, Bishop Eberhard II. of Bamberg built the women's monastery of St. Maria and St. Theodor in 1157 with the help of the Countess Gertrud, widow of the Count Hermann of Höchstadt-Stahleck and sister of King Conrad III. Bishop Eberhard II. intended with the founding of the monastery particularly that "our city, which is surrounded on all sides by strongholds of canons and monks, should also possess God-dedicated virgins in its vicinity, the service of God should be increased in it, and the care for the poor and foreigners should leave nothing to be desired."
