The siege of Mainz in 1689 was part of the hostilities of the War of the Palatine Succession and one of several sieges of the fortress city.
The war began in 1688 with the invasion of French troops into the left bank territories of the Empire. Among other things, the French succeeded in capturing the fortress of Philippsburg as well as the more or less bloodless takeover of the electoral Cologne territory and the capture of Mannheim and other cities in Southwest Germany, along with the destruction of Heidelberg Castle.
