Moselle ferry Koblenz-Lay

The Moselle ferry Koblenz-Lay ran on the Moselle in Koblenz at kilometer 9.05 and connected the districts of Lay and Güls. Since the 14th century, there has been documentary evidence of a ferry connection in Lay. The ferry service was discontinued in 2013.

From the Middle Ages to recent times, the ferry was an important link for the citizens of Layer to get to their vineyards and fields on the opposite side of the Moselle. In documents about the sale of vineyards on the rock opposite the ferry from Lay to the Koblenz monastery of St. Kastor in 1320 and 1321, the Moselle ferry was mentioned for the first time. Another document dated 6 July 1342 and a bill of sale dated 28 February 1345, issued by the imperial notary Heinrich von Winningen, attest to the existence of the river crossing.
