Royal Fireworks Laboratory Radeberg

The Royal Fireworks Laboratory Radeberg was an armaments factory producing from 1915 to 1919 in Radeberg, owned by the Saxon State. During World War I, mainly fuzes and detonators were produced. At times, over 5,000 people worked in the factory. In 1920, the FWL was acquired by Sachsenwerk Licht- und Kraft-AG in Dresden. The preserved buildings of the factory, such as the fuse workshop, administration building, dining hall building, and gatehouse are protected as historical monuments.
At the beginning of World War I, there was a large military area in the Dresden Albertstadt with barracks complexes, training grounds, storage facilities for military equipment, as well as a munitions facility and its own weapons manufacturing. The initially smooth supply of troops with ammunition and weapons quickly came to a halt a few months later. As the combat operations turned into larger material battles, the existing resources were far from sufficient to secure the material supply for the front. The greatest shortages occurred with fuzes, which made the construction of a new fireworks laboratory necessary, primarily to produce fuzes.
