The Dessau City Park is an approximately eight-hectare park located west of the historic city center of Dessau. The artworks in the park include the bronze sculpture "Centaur" by the Berlin sculptor Reinhold Begas, a bust of Moses Mendelssohn, and monuments for Wilhelm Müller and Friedrich Schneider by the Dessau sculptor Hermann Schubert.
A first report on the usage of the area dates back to 1475. By the end of the 17th century, twelve gardens were counted here. In 1688, Prince Johann Georg II claimed six of these plots for the establishment of the New Town. His son, Prince Leopold, had the medieval city wall demolished in 1708 and replaced it with the more extensive excise wall from 1712 onwards. By around 1740, he had two palaces built for his sons Prince Eugen and Prince Moritz. In 1780, a garden house was set up in the palace garden as a mausoleum for Prince Eugen and later transformed into an orangery. On the eastern side of Kavalierstraße, the Ducal Court Theatre was constructed by 1798 according to plans by Erdmannsdorff. Around 1830, the palace of Prince Georg was built – which later became the Anhalt Picture Gallery. In the further course of the 19th century, during the industrialization period, the northern part of the present city park and the surrounding neighborhoods were developed.
