Old Melt

The Alte Schmelz is an ensemble of industrial culture in St. Ingbert. All important parts of the former ironworks are now listed as historical monuments. It is a vivid testament to corporate housing care and a historical example of the close proximity of living and working in an ironworks over the last 250 years. The various phases of the development history of the company founded in 1733 can still be clearly discerned today. Furthermore, the contemporary social structures and hierarchies of the patriarchally run large enterprise become evident. Separated from the walls of the factory lie the two director villas in a generous English landscape park, right next to the factory the workers' settlement with small vegetable gardens, a shop with goods sold at reduced prices by the factory, and a dormitory for 144 men a bit further out.
