Hirzenach Parsonage

The Propstei Hirzenach is a former Benedictine monastery in the Boppard district of Hirzenach. Its local landscape is significantly shaped by the architectural ensemble of the still preserved monastery buildings.

The Propstei was founded in the early 12th century by the Abbey of St. Michael in Siegburg on land that Emperor Henry IV had donated to the Archdiocese of Cologne with the stipulation that a monastery be established there. Extensive donations in the early days of the monastery quickly ensured stable economic conditions. Soon after its foundation, construction began on a Romanesque Propstei church, which underwent a transformation in the style of early Gothic in the 13th century. In the 18th century, it took over the responsibilities of the neighboring, dilapidated parish church of the village. After French troops occupied Hirzenach in 1796, the French administration dissolved the monastery in 1802. Part of the property went to the Hirzenach parish, while the remaining part was auctioned off.
