Moorlage

We know nothing precise about the early history of the small farming community of Moorlage, part of Gleesen in the municipality of Emsbüren in southern Emsland. Until the year 1400, Moorlage belonged to the common Mark Lünne. This part of the Spellerwald only received its name after 1400. It seems that Moorlage was settled from Venhaus, as Schriever writes. All colonies, except for the Buthof – today Butmeyer – and Imbusch – today Imbus – were subject to the noble estate of Venhaus. Ecclesiastically, Moorlage was affiliated with the parish of Emsbüren. The Aa was the boundary line.

In Schriever, Volume II, p. 17, we find Moorlage mentioned in the following document: After many disputes between the Count of Tecklenburg and the Bishop of Münster, a resolution was reached on October 25, 1400, that the Count of Tecklenburg, who was in charge of the County of Lingen, had to cede, among others, the Spellerwald belonging to Plantlünne, i.e., the localities Dreierwalde, Venhaus, and Moorlage to Münster. This is also our first mention of the name of the estate.

Under the term: “Spellerwolt,” the places Dreierwalde, Venhaus, and Moorlage were summarized. An impassable, marshy area covered with underbrush is the border strip between Venkigau, the Trecwiti-Gau, and Bursibant. It is believed to have been uninhabited in the 9th and 10th centuries.
