Kornmarkt-Center Bautzen

The Kornmarkt-Center is the largest shopping mall in Upper Lusatia. It was inaugurated on 20 September 2000 on the eponymous Kornmarkt in the old town of Bautzen.

In the early 1990s, a large part of Bautzen's old town was threatened with "acute dilapidation". This is one of the reasons why the city was one of 12 other cities in Europe to participate in a funding project for the "revitalisation of historic old towns". A few years later, when the prerequisites for modernizing the buildings or constructing new buildings were met, Bautzen launched the national urban planning competition "Kornmarkt" in 1995, which was to be used for the redesign and construction of a shopping and service center on the square.
A total of 63 works were submitted in the summer of 1996, and three years later, the restructuring and modernization of the Kornmarkt finally began. Among other things, a high-rise building was demolished, which had severely affected the surrounding area since 1972. The open space has been planted with vegetation on the one hand, and converted into a car park on the other. In the adjacent southern area, the opening ceremony of the Kornmarkt-Center took place on February 15, 1999. The opening took place on 20 September 2000 and the investment volume amounted to approximately EUR 51 million.
