Sommerfeld is located at the natural transition from the forest area of the Rüthnicker Heide to the Rhinluch. To the west of the village, the railway line Kremmen–Meyenburg runs alongside. To the south, the Kremmer Damm runs. The district includes the residential areas Alter Hof and Sana-Kliniken. Sommerfeld borders the district of Beetz to the north and east, the district of Hohenbruch to the east, and the district of Kremmen to the south and west.
Sommerfeld was first mentioned in a document in 1242 as Sommerfeldt when the village was transferred with 40 hoofs to the Cistercian monastery of Lehnin. From 1318 to 1541, it was owned by the monastery of Himmelpfort, a daughter monastery of Lehnin. In 1541, the monastery of Himmelpfort was secularized and its possessions were pawned. In 1557, the former monastery estate was finally granted by Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg to his confidant Adam von Trott as a hereditary fief. Subsequently, Sommerfeld became part of the lordship of Badingen and Himmelpfort. By no later than 1574, there was an alehouse in the village. A windmill was built in 1583.
