The Fontane birth house in Neuruppin, located at today's Karl-Marx-Straße 84, was built after the city fire of 1787 during the reconstruction in 1788. The pharmacist Louis Henry Fontane and Emilie, née Labry, married in 1819 and moved from Berlin to Neuruppin. They were able to purchase the house with the attached pharmacy at a favorable price. At the entrance to the still existing Löwen-Apotheke, a memorial plaque reminds us of this, on which the following inscription can be read:
The house was extensively remodeled in 1867 with a third floor and a façade covered with plaster. In 1932, the hallway was shifted to the left and mainly the ground floor was structurally altered by adding a contemporary cladding made of limestone.
