Federal Office of Foreign Affairs

The Federal Foreign Office is a higher federal authority in Germany, which was established on 1 January 2021 as part of the Federal Foreign Office. The BfAA supports the German missions abroad and the Federal Foreign Office in tasks that require special expertise and are not ministerial matters. The BfAA is the first subordinate authority of the Federal Foreign Office in its 150-year history.
After lengthy discussions on the reforms to the Federal Foreign Office's portfolio, the German Bundestag adopted the Act on the Establishment of a Federal Foreign Office on 15 May 2020, which entered into force on 24 June 2020. Non-ministerial tasks are to be outsourced from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the BfAA.
