It is located in the Harz National Park east of Torfhaus in the unincorporated area of Harz in Lower Saxony. Immediately west of the monument is the Kaiserweg hiking trail, which crosses the Abbe north of the monument over the lynx bridge.
The lynx monument is a kind of answer to the lynx stone on the Brocken and the lynx stone near Lautenthal, which commemorate the shooting of the last lynxes in the Harz Mountains in 1817 and 1818. 200 years after its extinction, it commemorates the successful reintroduction of lynxes in the Harz Mountains at the beginning of the 21st century. Near the site was the reintroduction enclosure, from which the lynxes were released into the wild between 2000 and 2006.
