The historic old town of Meiningen is the urban center that developed in the Middle Ages, covering approximately 25 hectares within the former city walls. It is part of the monument ensemble that has been included in the urban monument protection funding program since 1991, which under the project name "Meininger Altstadt" encompasses almost the entire city center with a total of 94 hectares. In 2015, the Meininger Altstadt had 3,412 inhabitants.
The historic city center is situated at an elevation of 287 m above sea level and occupies the southern part of the city district of Zentrum, which lies in the geographic center of the city of Meiningen. Today, the city center is surrounded by the northern city area around the English Garden, the city area along Neu-Ulmer-Straße in the east, the western city area Auf dem Mittleren Rasen, and the district of Südstadt. A clear demarcation from these districts is represented by the two medieval moats known as "Bleichgräben," which have a rampart, and the "Mühlgraben." Until 1974, the federal highway B19 ran through the old town in a north-south direction.
