Hamme Lowlands

The Hammeniederung is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony town of Osterholz-Scharmbeck and the municipalities of Worpswede, Lilienthal and Ritterhude in the district of Osterholz.

The nature reserve with the designation NSG LÜ 312 is 2,849 hectares in size. It is largely designated at the same time as the FFH area "Untere Wümmeniederung, untere Hammeniederung mit Teufelsmoor", which extends over 4,153.32 hectares and also includes parts of the northern nature reserve "Teufelsmoor", as well as a bird sanctuary "Hammeniederung", which extends over 6,296 hectares and also large parts of the landscape conservation area of the same name, which often surrounds the nature reserve, as well as parts of the nature reserve "Teufelsmoor" comprises. The nature reserve borders in many places on the "Hammeniederung" landscape conservation area, in the north also on the "Teufelsmoor" and "Beekniederung" landscape conservation areas, as well as on the "Teufelsmoor" nature reserve at the crossing of the state road 153 with the Beek. The former nature reserve "Hamme-Altarm" and parts of the previous landscape conservation areas "Hammewiesen" and "Worpswede" were merged into the protected area. The ordinances of the nature reserves "Pennigbütteler Moor" and "Wiesen und Weiden nordöstlich des Breiten Wassers" on the edge of the area as well as the nature reserve "Breiten Wasser" within the area remained in force for the time being. These protected areas were merged into the nature reserve on 3 October 2019. The area has been under protection since 20 April 2017. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Osterholz.
