Munterley

The Munterley is a steep and extremely rugged rock formation with a height of 482 meters above sea level at the edge of the town of Gerolstein in the Southern Eifel. It is part of the Gerolstein Dolomites.
The rock formations of the Munterley formed 380–320 million years ago as a limestone reef in a tropical Devonian shallow sea. This was created from corals and stromatopores. The reef crest, the steep drop, and the underlying talus slopes are clearly visible in the Gerolstein Dolomites, similar to what is found in the coral reefs of tropical seas. As a result of the leaching of calcium carbonate and the enrichment of magnesium carbonate from the skeletons of the marine organisms that formed the reef, dolomite was formed in the Gerolstein reefs through crystallization. The fossil forms were lost during this chemical process. Therefore, no fossils can be found in the massive rock walls anymore.
