Slag heap Northern Germany

The filling of the tailings pile by the mine was completed in March 2001. The slag heap, which is considered a burning slag heap, has a floor area of 81 hectares and is 102 metres high at its highest point. 80 million tons of rock are stored in the dump.
The slag heap can be seen from the A 57 motorway. Above all, the "Hallenhaus" on one of the peaks catches the eye. The skeletal house in the form of a steel frame is a work of art by the Dutch group "Observatorium", which has also designed other landmarks and objects in the Ruhr area. The house has several functions in the Lower Rhine Landscape Park: it welcomes arrivals on the surrounding motorways and is a meeting and event venue that can be rented from the Ruhr Regional Association for private and business events.
