The cave is located in a sandstone rock face near the castle ruins of Burg Ramstein .
It is not a deep or long cave, but rather a rocky niche or cavity – large enough to hide in. It is located in a particularly beautiful area, close to hiking trails in the Butzerbachtal , with bridges, gorges and old Roman remains.
The name “ Sylvesterhöhle ” is possibly connected to a hermit or saint who is said to have lived there, or to New Year's Eve (Silvester) , although there is no conclusive historical explanation for this. It is also called "The Eye of the Lonely Hermit".
Local tradition tells that hermits or monks retreated there for prayer and seclusion. There are also folk tales of ghostly apparitions in or around the cave – typical for this mysterious region of ruins and forests.
