La cova està situada en una paret de roca gres, a prop de les ruïnes del castell de Burg Ramstein .
No és una cova profunda ni llarga, sinó més aviat un nínxol o cavitat rocós , prou gran com per amagar-s'hi. Està situat en una zona especialment bonica, a prop de rutes de senderisme a Butzerbachtal , amb ponts, goles i antigues restes romanes.
El nom " Sylvesterhöhle " possiblement estigui relacionat amb un ermità o un sant que es diu que hi va viure, o amb la nit de Cap d'Any (Silvester) , encara que no hi ha una explicació històrica concloent per a això.
La tradició local explica que ermitans o monjos s'hi retiraven per pregar i aïllar-se. També hi ha llegendes populars sobre aparicions fantasmals a la cova o els seus voltants, típiques d'aquesta misteriosa regió de ruïnes i boscos.
