The Capuchin Cross ( Kapuzinerkreuz ), also known as the Doppelkreuz , originally dates from 1750 and was renovated in 1857 .
Unfortunately, it was completely destroyed in 1940 by a military vehicle during World War II. Thanks to the efforts and donations of the local population, the cross was rebuilt in 1953. The new version was designed by the sculptor August Julius Lebensted from Kröv and was consecrated on 14 June 1953 .
The cross shows two crucified figures: one with her head raised to heaven, and the other with her head bowed to the earth. According to Mayor Dr. Anton Ley, the two female figures on either side of the cross symbolize respectively "the highest feminine perfection" and "the possibility of redemption from human weakness"
The Capuchin Cross is not only a religious symbol, but also a reminder of the resilience of the community of Bernkastel-Kues . It serves as a place of contemplation and remembrance, and is an important part of the town's cultural heritage.
