This fountain is a gift from the Czech twin city of Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) and was designed by Czech artist Jan Kotek . The fountain symbolizes eternal life, day and night, and the enduring power of nature.
The fountain is located on Karlsbader Platz , a square that was opened in July 2005 to celebrate the twinning of Bernkastel-Kues and Karlovy Vary. This twinning has existed since 1990 and is characterised by lively cooperation and exchange between the two cities.
The fountain consists of several elements:
A girl's face representing the day.
A boy's face with closed eyes symbolizing the night.
Two snakes that embody eternal power, with wine grapes on their bodies, among other things, referring to the wine tradition of the region.
A waterfall that flows down in three tiers , depicting the eternal cycle of life and nature.
