Short Description

The nature trail is a circular route of approximately 3.8km through the nature reserve Kalbescher Werder and offers you a unique nature experience. In the nature reserve, we deliberately refrained from using information boards to sharpen your senses.

Description

The trail is marked by a yellow sign. Nine different forest communities can be admired here in a small area. Especially in spring, you can experience a true bird concert. You will discover many old and ancient trees along the trail that have fascinated people for generations.

Particularly impressive is the sea of wood anemones in spring. The occurrences of marsh calla, chess flower, four-leaf oneberry, large twinleaf, marsh marigold, European honeysuckle, and iris are remarkable. The nature reserve is home to numerous species of mushrooms and lichens.

Directions

The path starts behind the western edge of the village - the entrance is on the left behind the large oak tree.

Through a bird cherry-ash forest, it leads over a boardwalk after about 100 meters through the marshy area, then crosses a driveway from where you can see the mighty old beech tree at Gutsteich. It then continues southwest, accompanied on the right by a flooded alder-ash forest and a small watercourse. This stream originates in the area of the Seven Springs, where watercress thrives and once supplied water to the water mill on the manor in Vienau.

After about 200 meters, where the sports field is on the left, follow the path along the edge of the forest until it leads further into the nature reserve on the right. You will now walk through an alder-birch-beech forest and where the path ends on a slightly wider path, turn sharply left and continue south on this forest path. Here, there is a very species-rich shrub and herb layer.

Follow the markings, and you will pass through an oak-hornbeam forest and an alpine witchgrass-alder-ash forest to the pure lichen-pine forest, where mighty gnarled pines and oaks stand at its southern edge.

The lichen-pine forest in the nature reserve is so nutrient-poor in places that windblown areas could even form.

At the northern end of the trail, you will come across the driveway between Kahrstedt and Vienau. Follow this path to return to the starting point. However, do not miss observing the richly structured forests to the left of this path. There you will find both larch stands and other tree species.

Parking Information

Parking is available for free at the community center about 150m away.

Safety Information

To protect the sensitive animal and plant life, please observe the following:

- The nature reserve must not be entered outside the designated paths

- Riding or driving with motorized vehicles is not allowed

- Camping or having a picnic in the green areas or starting fires is prohibited, as is making noise

Please do not pick any plants or mushrooms from the area and do not disturb the wildlife.

Equipment

Sturdy footwear and a backpack with provisions would be advantageous.
