3-ferry tour

Short description

The special feature of this tour is the cable ferries of the Elbe and Saale rivers. In the mid-17th century, a Dutchman invented the technology of the cable ferries. The ferry is propelled by the current of the river to be crossed. The ferry is attached to a cable anchored in the riverbed. By tilting the ferry against the current, it is pushed to the other bank.

The starting point of this bike tour is Barby on the Elbe, a village located near the confluence of the Saale. Barby was first mentioned in a document in 961 and offers its visitors a number of historical buildings such as the two watchtowers along the city wall, Prinz and Prinzeßchen, the castle - now the land registry archive of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, town hall, gauge house, as well as St. Johns Church and St. Marys Church. The Seepark Barby is also worth a visit, whether with family, friends, alone or with the club, this recreational area invites you to relax actively.

From Barby, take the Elbe ferry Saalhorn to Ronney on the country road to Walternienburg, with a visit to the water castle. From there, ride through Poleymühle on the Elbe Cycle Path on shady paths through the floodplain and pine forests of the Steckby - Lödderitzer Forest to Tochheim. There you cross with the Elbe ferry Breitenhagen.

In the former boatmens village, you can take a leisurely break on the old Elbe cargo barge and enjoy an idyllic landscape from the terrace.

From Breitenhagen, cycle on the Old Zerbster Straße and further on the newly developed cycle path on the dike crown to the Rosenburg. The old castle ruins were first mentioned in 965. The path then leads through the floodplain forest in Hasselbusch to the Saale ferry.

Once there, the Saale cycle path takes you back to Barby via Tornitz.
