City tour through Wittenberg

This circular tour connects the most important sights of Lutherstadt.

Description

In addition to the historic town centre with the castle church, town church, Melanchthon and Luther House, the tour takes you to the Hundertwasser School, the town forest with NABU centre, the butterfly park, the exemplary restored Piesteritz factory estate, the boat landing stage in Kleinwittenberg and past historic industrial architecture to the old harbour area.

Directions

From the market, follow the signs for the Berlin-Leipzig cycle route in an easterly direction. Turn left at the Lutherhaus, pass the historic post office building and follow Friedrichstraße to the right after the traffic lights. About 200 metres after the roundabout, at the bus shelter on the opposite side of the road, turn left along the path along the stream to the Hundertwasser School. Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and follow Schillerstraße to the left. At the roundabout, continue straight on until you reach the traffic lights, then turn right into Berliner Straße. Cross this road after 200 metres and turn left behind the Stadtwerke power station into Große Bruchstraße and continue to Hauptstraße. Follow Eichstraße to the right until you reach the roundabout. Leave the roundabout at the second exit and turn into Reindorfer Weg (one-way street). Pass the NABU centre (small animal park, free of charge) as far as the level crossing, then continue on the road to the left as far as the junction with Rothemarkstraße. Cross at the pedestrian lights on the right (note: Alaris Butterfly Park immediately after the bend) and cycle along the side road into the old village of Piesteritz. After a few metres on cobblestones, cross the small bridge on the right and continue past the indoor swimming pool to the level crossing. Cycle around the gatehouse into the factory estate. At the triangle, keep right onto Krummen Weg until you reach the main road. Keep right there, cross the road immediately and follow Friedrich-Wolf-Straße until it joins the Elbe cycle path/Luther hiking trail. This leads past the Kleinwittenberg landing stage , industrial buildings from the Wilhelminian era and the old harbour via the pedestrian tunnel to the town centre, past the castle church with the Thesis door to the market.
