The Wettiner Weg is a new cultural experience route that leads to the beginnings of one of the most significant European noble families. The rise of the Wettiners began in the 10th century in the region between the rivers Saale and Mulde. Many testimonies from the early days, including the ancestral castle in Wettin, have been preserved to this day. In later centuries, other significant buildings were built. Two interconnected circular routes combine cultural experiences with nature enjoyment in a landscape for explorers.
The western route runs as a circular route over a length of 60 km between the Saale Valley and Petersberg. It connects significant testimonies of Wettiner history such as the ancestral castle in Wettin, the Templar Chapel in Mücheln, and the collegiate church in Petersberg, crossing several nature reserves.
We start our route where the history of the Wettiners began, in Wettin where their ancestral castle towers high above the banks of the Saale. From the charming holiday resort, the route leads northwards along the Saale to the art village Dobis with its numerous studios.
Behind Dobis, there is a steeper ascent of about five kilometers to overcome. The route continues over small, lightly traveled side streets, short sections of tree-lined avenues, and paved agricultural roads to Schlettau and from there via the Fuhne cycle path to the medieval center of Löbejün. Beyond Löbejün, the route follows another section of the Fuhne cycle path and then leads via paved agricultural roads to Kaltenmark. A short detour can be taken from there to Krosigk with the excursion restaurant in an old water mill, while the main route continues via paved agricultural roads and small side streets up to Petersberg.
The route then continues on side streets and – in part – paved agricultural roads with long rows of fruit trees to the outskirts of Halle and through the Franzigmark and the hilly landscape of the Brachwitzer Alps along the northern bank of the Saale to Brachwitz.
At the ferry terminal, the route meets the Saale cycle path coming from Halle. Follow this path in a northerly direction through parts of the Lower Saale Valley Nature Park with its porphyry landscapes. Passing by the unique Templar Chapel in Mücheln, you will return to the starting point Wettin.
