Oberschwäbische Barockstraße - Westroute

On the western route of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route, visitors can experience the Upper Swabian Baroque in all its glory. It leads from the north-west of the Upper Swabia-Allgäu region from the Heiligkreuztal monastery to the Birnau pilgrimage church on Lake Constance.

Monasteries, churches and famous putti

Starting in Riedlingen, where the Weilerberg Chapel can be visited, the route continues to Altheim, where the parish church of St. Martin between Bussen and Österberg features stucco work by Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer.

The Cistercian convent of Heiligkreuztal, the Franziskusgarten in Sießen Abbey in Bad Saulgau or one of the many costume and culinary tours in Mengen are well worth a visit. In the Hohenzollern town of Sigmaringen, the Josefskapelle chapel is a beautiful excursion destination

The route continues to Leibertingen to a memorial to the famous preacher Abraham a Sancta Clara, located high above the Danube, and then to Meßkirch with the town church of St. Martin. From there, you can visit two fantastic monasteries, namely Wald Monastery and Habsthal Monastery, until the route reaches Pfullendorf, where there are two churches and a chapel to marvel at.

The route continues towards Lake Constance past the well-known Salem Monastery and Castle. Here, you can view some of Salem's artistic highlights before reaching the fantastic vantage point of Birnau Basilica, from where you can look out over the entire lake. A view of the famous "Honigschlecker" is a must here. The final stop on the route is the New Meersburg Castle, one of the most original baroque residences, before continuing the journey or heading home.
