Iron Curtain Trail

The tour leads from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania near the Priwall, via Lübeck, along the Ratzeburger and Schaalsee lakes to Lauenburg. On the route, the state border between Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein is crossed several times. Places of the former border are visited. These include, for example, the border documentation site Lübeck-Schlutup or the Grenzhus Museum & Information Center Schlagsdorf.

The Iron Curtain Trail is part of a Europe-wide route (EuroVelo 13) from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea. The total length is about 10,000 km, the section along the border between Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein is 160 km long. From the Baltic Sea to the Elbe River, it always follows the evidence of the Cold War through pristine landscapes with magnificent views, along sparkling swimming lakes, rolling hills and deep forests. The route follows the course of the former Iron Curtain, the border between East and West or the Warsaw Pact countries and NATO. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was followed by the fall of the Iron Curtain.
