From Wriezen to Oderberg on the Old Oder North

The northern Oderbruch captivates its visitors with a unique scenic beauty. Vast plains on one hand, created as new land over many decades through drainage, and the hilly Barnim on the other hand, rising up to 100 meters in some places, give the region its charm. The historic lime kilns are its widely visible landmarks. With the start of limestone production in 1836, the infrastructure of the Oderbruch began to develop. Another important trading post was fishing, favored by the water abundance around Wriezen.After the first meters on the Neuen Kanal, the tour continues into the Old Oder. This makes the way easier naturally, thanks to the water flow that remains noticeable all the way to Oderberg. The pristine rows of trees and dense reed zones can be admired without much effort.The bathing area at the Neugaul bridge or the subsequent rest area in Altranft offer the first opportunities for a land break. In Altranft, various historical buildings and the castle can be visited in an open-air museum. A bit further north in Neutornow, there is also a nice bathing opportunity. The well-known historical poet Theodor Fontane frequently stayed in Schiffmühle, visiting his fathers unassuming half-timbered house, which can still be visited today.Heading further north, the slopes of Barnim near Bad Freienwalde are already clearly visible. The bathing stop in Bralitz is the last stop before the goal Oderberg.
