The extensive heath and forest landscapes around the ancient farming community of Itterbeck are the ideal destination for any nature lover. The name Itterbeck is derived from the small river Itter, which has its source in this region. Itterbeck is known for its juniper heath. The vast heath and forest landscapes as well as cultivated moors are largely untouched by human hands and therefore part of the Natura 2000 area Itterbecker Heide. A relic from long past is the Egger Riese, a massive boulder from the last Ice Age. Until 1970, the stone, which is around 150,000 years old, lay on its side. Only then was it erected in the Itterbecker Heide to demonstrate its enormous size to visitors.Note: Follow the orange signage!
