We start our tour in the parking lot "Auf der Schanze", pass the Florianbrücke and cross the "Neupförtner Wall" towards Klingelbrink. Take a look to the right at the Gröne house (Klingelbrink 25), a perfect combination of modern office building and old half-timbered house. Besides the typical entrance gate, marvel at the so-called Drudenfuss, a carving that was meant to ward off witches and evil spirits in the Middle Ages.
Continuing straight on the street "In der Halle 2" you will find the Hemmelmann house. The remarkable facade is adorned with highly interesting animal, fable, and human images. Next stop is the marketplace. On the left, the mighty gable of the Ottens house looms high. The building was constructed in 1635 for 2500 Reichstaler. For comparison: a teacher earned 50 Reichstaler per year at that time.
Take a brief pause at the bronze statue of the "Praying Farmer". It recalls the Benedictine Rule "Ora et labora - pray and work".
Now indulge in the past and admire the surrounding houses. The magnificent half-timbered house at Markt 11 is certainly one of the most beautiful houses in Wiedenbrück. The "profound" inscriptions and carvings on the facade are extremely fascinating.
Make a short stop at the historical town hall, which now serves as a registry office and dates back to 1619. Take a look at the "Neidkopf" (bottom of the north side, 3rd beam from the left), which served as a symbol of protection against evil. In front of the town hall entrance, there is a bronze relief of the city view from 1644.
Return back over the marketplace passing Ottens house on the right, up Lange Straße. Cross the street at the level of Konrad-Adenauer-Platz and pass the Ems River to reach the small lake. From here, you have a beautiful view of the city. Return to Lange Straße, follow it and admire the beautiful old burgher houses.
Turn right at the end of the street onto Mönchstraße. At the end, below the large arch, lies the former Franciscan monastery with the Marienkirche.
From Mönchstraße, Ostenstraße branches off, leading to Rietberger Straße. On the right side, turn into the alley "Hoetger-Gasse" and reach the Museum Wiedenbrücker Schule, a unique museum in Germany that offers an impressive collection of sacral art.
The tour continues over the rear square onto Reumontpromenade. Walk a stretch of the splendid path. Now cross the street "Am Neuen Werk" and come across Reckenberg, an old episcopal castle.
Cross the waterway and continue walking through Beckerpassage until you reach Marienstraße.
Follow it for a few meters and arrive at one of the most magnificent buildings in the city, as the St. Aegidius Church majestically rises towards the sky. The front transept dates back to the 13th century. A first church building in this area is assumed to exist around 785. Beautiful historical buildings with decorative ornaments and carvings surround the church. Take your time to admire them. For example, the house opposite the church tower at Kirchplatz 1 is particularly worth seeing.
Yet, Wiedenbrück is also a modern city, symbolized by the impressive Stadthaus. The building, constructed in 1985, now houses the administration of the VHS Reckenberg-Ems and the city library.
From the last highlight of the tour, the Aegidius Church, head back over the marketplace onto the street "In der Halle", over the "Neupförtner-Wall", back to the parking lot "Auf der Schanze".
