From Lüttringhausen through Diepmannsbach valley, Morsbach valley and back
This circular walk is 6.5 kilometres long and 130 metres above sea level and takes you through the Remscheid district of Lüttringhausen. Enjoy the unique yet typical Bergisch charm of the old town and the beautiful surroundings.
Starting point for the walk: “Hotel Fischer”
Start the walk at Lüttringhauser Straße, opposite the Hotel Fischer. There is plenty of parking here on the hard shoulder. The nearest bus stop is “Richthofenstraße” on bus line 654, direction Lüttringhausen-Klausen/Karl-Arnold-Straße. It is 200 metres or so away.
Opposite the hotel is a monument to Adolf Clarenbach. A native of Lüttringhausen and a reformer, he was one of the first Protestant martyrs to sacrifice his life for his faith in the Rhineland. There will be another opportunity to return to this beautiful place at the end of the walk.
From the starting point, turn left into “Felder Höhe”. On the horizon, you can see the striking outline of Remscheid with its iconic town hall and water tower. Turn immediately right into “Adolf-Clarenbach-Straße”.
The tarmac road leads gently downhill between houses on one side and pastures on the other towards the historic town centre. Pass “Pipersberg” on the left; its tower can be seen from miles away. Then you reach “Pulverstraße”. On the opposite corner is a beautiful Bergisch house, picturesquely framed by lilacs and wisteria, especially in spring. Passing the house on the left, we head straight for the onion dome of the Lutheran church.
Up to the Protestant church and then on to the Catholic
The road leads directly through a typical Bergisch old town narrow street to the church. Once at the church, turn right. On the hour, the tuneful church bells can be heard from afar. Turn left at the “Belfi” ice cream parlour and follow the road that bears right. At the next crossroads, turn left into “Tannenbergstraße” and follow it uphill before turning right into “Richard-Pick-Straße” at the next crossroads. The “Holy Cross” Catholic church is on your left.
In the heart of Lüttringhausen
Turn right at the T-junction. After a few metres to the next crossroads on “Gneisenaustraße”, keep left. At the end of this road, you will see Lüttringhausen's town hall on the other side of the road, whose tower also contributes to Lüttringhausen's unique skyline. Diagonally opposite the town hall, on the corner of “Kreuzbergstraße” and “Am Schützenplatz”, almost in the heart of Lüttringhausen, is the Hotel-Restaurant “Kromberg”, which been a family-run business for 125 years.
A centrepiece for all German football fans
Turn left into “Kreuzbergstraße” and follow it before turning left into “Gerberstraße”. Turn right and head along “Richard-Pick-Straße” again until it reaches “Klausener Straße” which you cross on the zebra crossing. You are now standing in front of the old municipal Jahn gymnasium on Jahnplatz, a facility reminiscent of times when “BV 08 Lüttringhausen” still celebrated success in the second national football division. “FC Remscheid” plays here today.
Past enchanting front gardens out into natural Bergisch surroundings
Pass the square on the left and head down the path until you reach “Remscheider Straße”. Cross the road and then turn right. Follow the road for little while passing the grounds of the Protestant Foundation “Tannenhof” on the opposite side of the road. If you like, you can make a detour to the left at number 67 to find a nice photo opportunity or viewpoint behind the houses. However, the route continues a little bit further before turning left into “Stursberger Straße” in a quiet residential area. The many small front gardens here are enchanting with their colourful and varied blooms, especially in spring.
The road leads gently down towards a wooded area. When you reach this, turn left off the road into a steeply sloping forest path that runs along a field. As soon as the forest path divides, keep right and continue following the path. At the first opportunity, turn left and you will come across another tarmac road. Turn right here.
To the enchanting Tackermühle farm on the Morsbach
Turn left at the next opportunity, cross a stream over a small bridge and then follow the path that runs parallel to the Diepmannsbach river here on the right. The river joins the Morsbach further along. The route leads past the old Tackermühle, which was built in the 15th century as a fruit mill and later served as a textile mill. At the next T-junction, turn left and you will now see the large reservoir pond. It is hidden behind the mill and once powered the water wheel for the spinning mill. Today, however, the reservoir pond is only a third of its original size.
Over the Diepmannsbach river
At the next opportunity, turn left into the forest, cross the Diepmansbach river again over a wooden bridge and then follow the soft, root-strewn path uphill. To the left below you, you can now see the mill’s reservoir in all its glory. The path bears right and divides. Take the right-hand path and go straight uphill. Ignore two turn offs to the left. Once at the crest of the hill, you can choose between two routes A short detour to the right through the forest brings you in a semi-circle down to the A1 motorway, rewarding you with a beautiful view over a meadow to Lennep. Or you can continue straight ahead. Both paths eventually merge again. Go straight ahead for a while before turning left past a small group of trees onto a farm track that leads past meadow fences.
Destination in sight
The “Pipersberg” tower appears again on the horizon. The path leads into a dip, past a paddock and between fields until it meets a tarmac road at the top. Turn right here and follow the road until it reaches our starting point opposite the Hotel “Fischer”.
You can now visit the monument to Adolf Clarenbach, mentioned at the beginning, which is to the right of the hotel, and enjoy the beautiful view over the fields.
