Seven Mountains - Geo Hike: Eudenberg

The Eudenberg is an abandoned quarry with various extraction plateaus in the area of a former volcanic cone. Basalt was mined here from the end of the 19th century until 1967 and transported by train with its own connection to the former railway line Hennef - Asbach in the valley. While today its slopes on the upper slope are covered with dense mixed deciduous forest, there are meadows at the base of the slope, and a biotope has formed after the closure of the quarry operation, which is protected. In the deepest part of the quarry, a quarry pond formed. Comparing old pictures of the ongoing demolition with the current state, it is hardly imaginable how huge amounts of rock were transported away with tiny freight wagons. Today, the quarry is inaccessible and closed to visitors, and on our hike we walk on old economic paths or in the Hanfbachtal on the old railway line, which is hardly noticeable from Asbach to Hennef, around the old volcanic cone.
