The circular hiking trail in the area of Salzhemmendorf leads through the Kanstein, the northernmost and highest elevation of the Thüster Berg. The goal of the ascent is the Lönsturm at 440 m above sea level, which offers an impressive view over the entire region to Hannover and the Harz Mountains. With clear visibility, you can even see the Brocken or the Hermannsdenkmal in the Teutoburg Forest. The 26 m high tower was built in 1928 and named after the heath poet Hermann Löns, who visited this area several times.
The trail also passes by various quarries and impressive cliffs. Several abandoned quarries have been reclaimed by nature and are now under special protection due to their plant and animal life. The Kanstein cliffs are also popular among climbers throughout Northern Germany. Take a moment here to watch the athletic activities before continuing your hike.
