Description by the author

This tour passes through the Elbe lowlands, a unique river landscape. Get to know this region on quiet cycle paths away from the busy roads.
The Mühlberg Stadtmuseum local history museum is the starting point for this bicycle tour. The route leaves the town heading for the new Elbe Bridge and crosses the border from Brandenburg into Saxony. The route then reaches the village of Seydewitz and continues along the Elbe Cycle Path towards Außig. Here, we tread for the first time in the footsteps of Emperor Charles V, at the spot where he set up camp for a rest after the battle.

In Schirmenitz we reach the site where the War Council was held on the morning of the battle. The tour continues via Pausnitz, passing an ostrich farm. In Strehla, we then cross the River Elbe on an old motor-powered ferry to Lorenzkirchen. The path continues along the Elbe riverbank via Kreinitz, Gaitzsch-Häuser and Borschütz returning to Mühlberg.

Along the way, we will come across testaments to German history that transform this bicycle tour into a quite unique experience. The historic centre of Mühlberg with its extraordinarily important complex, comprising the former Marienkloster Monastery, castle built on old foundations, parish church and Town Hall, is largely preserved and restored. The journey ends at Mühlberg Palace. Following a fire in the town, Duke Moritz of Saxony had it rebuilt as a farm and hunting lodge. A visit to the Stadtmuseum local history museum in the Monastery Provostry built in 1531, where visitors can learn about shipping and fishing on the River Elbe, local crafts, sacred art and the Battle of Mühlberg, as well as the former prisoner of war and special camp, completes this tour. Continue by bike to Falkenberg/Elster.
