The stage at a glance:
1. Start and endpoint of the stage
The stage starts in the picturesque historic center of Tecklenburg and ends at the castle in the Kneipp spa town of Bad Iburg.
Tip: It is worth making a detour to the remains of the mighty castle complex in Tecklenburg. From there, you have a fascinating view over the entire town center.
2. Length of the stage in kilometers / altitude meters / route character
The stage is 21 kilometers long and has an altitude difference of about 300 meters. The route is largely flat and natural.
3. Landscape features
Along the stage, fresh limestone beech forests alternate with a dense carpet of spring flowers, with sparse and barren forests on sandstone. The trail from Lengerich is characterized by numerous quarries where limestone is or was broken for cement production. Some quarries are now protected and no longer in operation. Still, they are worth a visit. The most impressive of them is the "Lengericher Canyon". This quarry has been renatured and is under protection. From two viewing platforms near the trail, you can look down at the turquoise glowing water deep down in the old quarry. The route is lined with many viewpoints.
Break tip: Halfway through the stage, it is worth stopping for refreshments at the traditional inn "Malepartus".
Highlights on the route
The historic old town center of Tecklenburg is known for its narrow alleys, lovingly restored half-timbered houses, and offers numerous cultural attractions, such as the open-air theater in summer. The water castle Haus Marck in Tecklenburg is an impressive building where high-class castle concerts are held in the summer. The Iburg castle in Bad Iburg is a princely residence and Benedictine abbey from the 11th century. The castle is the landmark of the city and offers impressive views of the surroundings.
The Bad Iburg Clock Museum offers a comprehensive collection of clocks and clock parts from different eras and countries. The 600-meter-long treetop walkway in Bad Iburg offers over 30 adventure and learning stations as well as an impressive 30 m high viewing platform with a view of the Teutoburg Forest. You can experience nature from a new perspective and learn a lot about the flora and fauna of the region. Some of the trees are up to 250 years old and provide habitat for five different bat species, among other things.
Good to know: The treetop walkway is wheelchair accessible.
