The starting point of the hike is the Catholic parish church "St. Johannes". From here, we follow the local circular route W4 along the road in a southerly direction. At the edge of the forest, the hiking trail turns left and leads up to the ruins of St. Gotthard's Basilica. The three-aisled pillar basilica is a fine example of a 13th and 14th century monastery church. The two rows of arcades and the impost friezes decorated with a chessboard pattern date back to the Gründerzeit. The tower of the basilica offers an unforgettable panoramic view, which is considered one of the most beautiful in the Odenwald. On the way from the basilica to the Sattelhütte, we see numerous old boundary stones along the way. At the hut, we turn left and walk down a panoramic hillside path to Reuenthal. Ruwendal" was first mentioned in a document in 1248. The meaning of the word refers to a lonely and desolate area. In fact, the few houses are located in a secluded side valley of the Mud. Nevertheless, the village was divided into two parts in the Middle Ages. It was not until 1972 that Reuenthal was "united" and became part of Weilbach. In Reuenthal, we turn left, walk down the little-used road for a while and then walk to the right of the road on a beautiful hillside path to Weilbach.
