Description

The Triassic Gate refers to the narrow breakthrough of the Unstrut River from the Harz foreland into the Triassic region. The river has cut deeply and narrowly into the colored sandstone (Triassic = colored sandstone, Muschelkalk, and Keuper) on its way to the Saale River. The thematic richness of this rugged, diverse landscape is connected by the 32 km long circular trail, alternatively divisible into two separate rounds. On both sides of the Unstrut River, between Wendelstein, Memleben, Wangen, and Nebra, ten panels explain the unique features of the Triassic Gate.
Entry:
The entry is recommended from the monastery and imperial palace in Memleben. General information is available here. A visit to the exhibition in the monastery is worthwhile and prepares for the historical, medieval aspect of the Triassic Gate. Other starting points are possible. Parking spaces are available in Wangen at the Arche Nebra and in Nebra at the Hotel Himmelsscheibe.

Note: Due to a rockfall in July 2022, the path between Nebra and Großwangen is currently impassable. A bypass is possible above the cliff. Detailed information can be obtained from the Saale-Unstrut Triassic region Nature Park.
