Two differently exciting quarries are connected by the almost eight-kilometer circular path around the two Kellenberge - the Small one rises 145 meters, the Big Kellenberg more than 210 meters. Stones for building houses and roads were still being mined at both sites around 100 years ago. Workers in the Bad Essener district Barkhausen discovered fossilized tracks of at least eleven different dinosaurs. Life-size replicas show what the animals looked like. Information panels of the Nature and UNESCO Geopark TERRA.vita explain why the footprints survived the millions of years in the once soft seabed, making a particularly exciting chapter of Earth's history experienceable here.
Traces of the former work are no longer visible at the second former quarry today, by no means. The Dücke-Mühlenbach plunges five meters deep into the abandoned pit, feeding the Green Lake. Its unmistakable turquoise shimmer is due to dissolved minerals.
The paths between the two quarries lead through magnificent, forested natural landscapes and to a particularly beautiful viewpoint that offers an unobstructed view of the neighboring municipality of Melle.
A detailed description can be found in the tour planner of the Nature and Geopark TERRA.vita.
