Walk at the Menhirs of Europe

At the borders of France, Germany, and Luxembourg, in the heart of the Land of Three Borders, lies a unique open-air museum: the Menhirs of Europe – Steine an der Grenze. This cross-border artistic journey unfolds within a stunning natural landscape, between the villages of Launstroff and Wellingen, where history and nature intertwine intimately.

Born in the 1980s under the impetus of German sculptor Paul Schneider, the project draws inspiration from the humanist dream of Otto Freundlich, a visionary artist who imagined a road of peace connecting Berlin to Paris, marked by symbolic works.

Since 1986, 38 artists from 18 nationalities have left their mark by erecting 36 monumental sculptures.

These stone works, true "modern menhirs", embody the meeting of cultures, memories, and hopes of a continent in search of peace and unity.

Whether they symbolize the tensions of the past, the borders to be crossed, or the bridges to be built, each sculpture invites contemplation and dialogue.

Here, raw materials – granite, sandstone, marble – come to life in contact with the wind, silence, and time.

A 10-kilometer route, freely accessible (without signage for the moment), leads you through fields to discover these stone giants, both rooted and open to the world.
