Wilderness Trail Stage 2 (FREE GPX VIA https://www.routeyou.com/nl-de/route/view/19557217?c=7015277330a14a95)

Four stages, 85 kilometers: A walk dedicated to the wild cat

Are you considering walking the Wilderness Trail? Or are you simply curious about the four stages of this nature experience offer? Further below you will find detailed information about the routes. If you complete the entire trail, you will have 1,891 meters of ascent and 2,251 meters of descent ahead of you.

In large parts of the national park, nature is already left to itself. Here, true wilderness is being created. However, it will take a considerable amount of time before there is an area-wide wilderness. The Eifel National Park is a "development national park," which has only existed since 2004. We therefore ask for your understanding regarding the still relatively wide paths in some places or the unavoidable work in the forest (such as restoration work or the removal of invasive trees).

The development towards the wilderness of tomorrow is an exciting process that you experience up close during a hike through the national park!

Look forward to the challenging routes and unforgettable nature experiences! Trade your daily life for flowing streams, fragrant flower meadows, deep forests, and far-reaching panoramas over the wilderness of tomorrow. During four daily stages totaling 85 kilometers, the wilderness trail takes you through the wild beauty of the Eifel National Park. From Monschau-Höfen in the south to the northernmost point at Hürtgenwald-Zerkall, the trail showcases the scenic diversity of the approximately 11,000-hectare national park. The daily stages cover 18 to 25 kilometers and can be shortened in parts.

The large Eifel National Park, established in 2004, is still considered a “national development park”: Protected areas in this category have 30 years to allow at least three-quarters of the area to grow without human interference—only then do they meet international criteria for a national park. But even now, the motto of the national park is “let nature be nature.” This means that humans allow nature to return to its own laws. On the wilderness trail, you will witness the exciting process of the emerging wilderness up close!

Explore the Region
As an alternative or complement to a continuous four-day hike, you can explore the region during a “lazy day”: Swimming pools, friendly small towns, as well as attractions such as the National Park Center Eifel with its 2,000 square meters of barrier-free interactive exhibition “Wilderness Dreams” invite you to visit.

Information and event tips can be found at the visitor forum Vogelsang and at the national park gates with tourist service reach and small national park exhibitions. Admission is free.

Path obligation – Stay on marked paths.

Leash obligation – Keep your dog on a leash.

Collection ban – Only take impressions and observations.

No smoking and no campfires.

Prevent noise.

Take your waste back – rubbish does not belong in nature.

Only cycle on designated paths.

Camping and overnight stays – even in a camper – are prohibited. Use the designated places in the vicinity of the national park.

Due to the increasing number of old trees in the national park, branches and trees can fall on the paths here—more often than in other forests. Especially during storms, snow, and thunderstorms, for your own safety, you should not enter the forest or leave it as quickly as possible.

The 33 square kilometer Dreiborner High Plateau in the Eifel National Park: Until the end of 2005, this area was actively used as a "military training ground Vogelsang".
For your safety, leaving the marked paths is prohibited, as there is life-threatening danger from weapons or unexploded ordnance near the paths.

Participation in events and entering the national park is at your own risk.
