Madum Lake - Himmerland's blue pearl

Imagine swimming in crystal clear water, where you can see the bottom everywhere and along the shore experience small animals, plants, and fish as if it were in an aquarium. And then you are completely surrounded by forest all around the beautiful lake. The lake is Denmark's largest representative of the rare lake type called Lobelia lakes after the characteristic plant Great Blue Lobelia. Right in the bathing season in July, the lake is adorned with a pink belt, where tens of thousands of Lobelias - from the leaf rosettes on the lake bottom - send their beautiful flowers above water for pollination. Madum Sø is a clear-water, nutrient-poor lake of 212 ha, with a maximum depth of eight meters and an average water depth of three meters. There is sandy bottom almost everywhere. The water in Madum Sø is completely clear, and sunlight reaches the bottom's plants and animals throughout the lake. In Madum Sø, only three species of fish live: perch, pike, and salmon. The latter stays in open water, while perch and pike are mainly found at the edges of the reed beds. While swimming in the lake, you can experience schools of small fish along the shore. These are young of all three species that use the reed beds as cover from their larger relatives. Madum Sø is protected and privately owned. Therefore, recreational fishing and boating are not allowed, and swimming must take place from the two public swimming areas located at each end of the lake. There are parking spaces available. A marked hiking trail has been established around the lake. The walk around is about seven km. From the parking lot at the east end, a path also leads to the protected high moor Langmosen. Here, you can choose between a short (three km) and a long (seven km) round trip.
