The mound is built on top of a moraine hill from the Ice Age. As far as can be judged from the measurements, the mound originally had a diameter of 18 m and a height of 4 m. Unfortunately, the entire upper half has been excavated over time, leaving only a 5 m wide and 1 m high mound remaining of the upper part today.
Hellehøj is located 89 m above sea level. The mound was protected in 1972 as a scenic protection, historical and recreational protection.
The granite block on the mound is a trigonometrical station used by the Geodata Agency as a reference point for mapping.
